Eh? What They Don't Tell You About Moving to Canada

When you’re in Rome, do as the Romans do. My grandmother’s wisdom rings true for any new place you call home. So, you're in Canada now, and you might be wondering, "Is this normal?" The first  morning, I noticed people just walking past each other without so much as a "Hi." I thought to myself, "Well, this is different."

Today, we're diving into the not-so-often-mentioned realities of moving to Canada. You know the tourist brochures: stunning landscapes, friendly people, poutine galore. But what about the everyday things they don't tell you? Buckle up, because we're about to get real about Canadian life!

Culture Shock: From Hola to Hold On

One of the first things you’ll notice in Canada is the lack of eye contact and casual greetings. Coming from Jamaica, where everyone is friendly and acknowledges each other, this can feel quite isolating. In Canada, it’s common to step into an elevator, greet someone, and get no response. This was a shock for me. It felt like I was invisible. But remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Adapt to the new norms, and don’t take it personally.

Just be prepared because coming from a warm, friendly culture like Jamaica, Canada can feel a bit... reserved. Don't be surprised by people keeping to themselves, or even the occasional lack of eye contact. It's not that they're rude, it's just a different social norm. Remember, "When in Rome..." Embrace the Canadian chill and adjust your greetings accordingly.

Fashion Faux Pas? No Way, Jose!

Those perfectly styled outfits you wear back home? You might not need them every day in Canada. Here, comfort reigns supreme. Don't be shocked to see people in pajamas at the grocery store (hey, it's all about efficiency!). Embrace the relaxed vibe and prioritize comfort over couture.

Workplace Etiquette: Keep It Professional and Personal

In the workplace, the culture is different as well. The office dynamic in Canada is all about professionalism and boundaries. Canadians can be very open and inquisitive. They might ask personal questions that feel intrusive. My advice? Keep your business to yourself. Keep conversations work-focused, and avoid oversharing personal information.

Share only the basics. They also have a first-name basis culture, regardless of your position. Don’t be surprised if your boss calls you by your first name and expects the same from you.

From Driver to Rider: The Bus Chronicles

If you’re used to driving everywhere in Jamaica, get ready to use public transportation in Canada until you get your driver’s license and your own vehicle. Buses here run on very specific schedules. If a bus is scheduled to leave at 8:58, it will depart at 8:58, not a minute later. Don’t try to chase a bus once it’s leaving. Another one will come, and you’ll save yourself the embarrassment. Learn the bus routes and how to use the system efficiently, including how to signal stops and pay fares. The buses also run in the opposite direction from what you might be used to, so pay attention to which side of the road you need to be on. Remember, patience is key – buses won't wait for anyone!

Then when it's that time to start driving, be aware that driving in Canada is another adjustment. You’ll be driving on the right side of the road, which is the opposite of Jamaica. Familiarize yourself with the driving rules and regulations, especially concerning school buses and speed limits. Canadian roads can be very strict, and it’s important to follow the rules to avoid fines and accidents.

Apartment Living: Hidden Surprises. Oh Canada, Land of the Free... From Bed Bugs?

Okay, this might be a shocker, but even beautiful Canada has its share of creepy crawlies.

Finding an apartment in Canada can be tricky. You might find a beautiful apartment that seems perfect, only to discover it’s infested with bed bugs and cockroaches. This was a hard lesson for me. Always do thorough research on your potential living spaces. Ask around and try to get insider information about the buildings and neighborhoods.

Conclusion

Canada is a fantastic place to live, but like anywhere, it has its quirks. By being prepared for the cultural differences and everyday realities, you'll be well on your way to settling in smoothly. Remember, knowledge is power!
